Browns Power Coal to Victory at Bairnsdale
Brown coal forms the basis for 92 percent of electricity generation in Victoria.
And on Tuesday at Bairnsdale, Brown Coal powered to the line to win the MyPunter.com Rating 58 1600m handicap. It was a popular success too, with the galloper well supported by punters to jump the $3.80 favourite.
There was a distinctly Brown flavour to this victory. Brown by name. Trained by the canny mentor Stephen Brown. Ridden by the young apprentice Stephen Brown Junior. The win took Brown Coal’s record to 2 wins from 15 starts and stakes in excess of $50,000.
Stephen Brown Junior’s ride showcased his gradual improvement as he gains more riding experience. He was positive from the gate to put Brown Coal in the box seat behind the leaders. Held up for a run between the 500m and 300m, Brown Junior showed good patience and then initiative to gradually work to the outside of those in front around the home turn.
Strong riding the last 100m was enough to lift the horse to a narrow but comprehensive win in the decent time of 1.37.3 for the mile. Brown Junior then showed composure off the track to survive a protest from the 2nd runner for alleged interference nearing the home turn.
Brown Coal power stations are no longer the flavour of the month with their high greenhouse gas emissions. The equine Brown Coal is travelling better after Tuesday and ensured his future as a racehorse is assured for a little while yet!
